About CANRIMT3
Machining is essential to precision high-value metal component production for the automotive, aerospace, energy, automation, biomedical, and machine building industries. Since 2010, the Canadian Network for Research and Innovation in Machining Technology (CANRIMT) has been at the forefront for scientific innovation, technology transfer, and commercialization of machining technology, boosting Canada’s industrial manufacturing capacity. Building upon the success of the first two phases of CANRIMT, this third phase (CANRIMT3) is co- led by Dr. Kaan Erkorkmaz of the University of Waterloo and Dr. Yusuf Altintas of the University of British Columbia. It is comprised of 13 researchers from 6 Canadian universities working in collaboration with 18 Canadian and international industry partner with the common goals of:
Partnership Goal #1: Leading-edge research and innovation in advanced manufacturing
Partnership Goal #2: World-class training and scientific leadership
Partnership Goal #3: Technology transfer, and economic, societal, and environmental benefits
The network has a budget of $10M over 5 years (2025-2029) and is funded by the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), Mitacs, and the industry partners. Ultimately, CANRIMT3 will enable the team and its broad range of industry partners to maintain Canadian leadership in advanced manufacturing R&D, and support the rapid adoption of current, emerging, and novel machining technologies.
